  • Full STEAM Ahead at Austin Friars

Whizzes, crashes and explosive experiments brought science to life at Austin Friars during its annual science week event.

The school welcomed pupils, parents and leading experts for a two-day celebration of STEAM - science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

The event began with a visit from Usmaa Choudry, a Presenter from the Royal Institution of Great Britain, who explored the world of supercells (including cells, bacteria and viruses) across two engaging sessions, one of which welcomed visiting pupils from Hunter Hall School in Penrith.

Ms Choudry concluded the first day with a community science show which required volunteers from the audience to take part in a range of exciting experiments including a bottle rocket, a tug of war test, flames, and more.

The second day shifted focus to careers as a range of guest speakers from across medical and health sciences, as well as various other industries, shared their expertise with Junior School pupils through a series of ‘carousel’ sessions.

Workshops included human biology, veterinary science, healthy living, neuroscience and environmental science, alongside specialist areas such as orthoptics, dentistry, and ear, nose and throat.

“Austin Friars is at the forefront of inspiring science teaching, igniting the spark of curiosity and encouraging pupils to see science as creative and connected to the real world.

Thank you to our fantastic panel of expert speakers who brought a wealth of scientific knowledge and its practical applications into the school, enhancing the children’s understanding and nurturing their interest in a broad range of subject and potential future careers in the world of science.”

    - Nick Mason, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (whose daughter attends Austin Friars)

The school’s ‘Science Week’ aimed to give pupils a deeper understanding of the opportunities available through STEAM education and formed part of the school’s wider commitment to enrich learning beyond the classroom.
